What is the reason that the R-78E5.0-0.5 is sold with the Smoothieboard instead of a LM7805? They are pin compatible and I don't see any big differences comparing the datasheets, so I should be able to just use a LM7805, correct?
I think you can try it if you are sure about what you are doing, but we only support adding the R-78E5.0-0.5. I'm not the more knowledgeable about it but I think it will handle 24v input better.
Even at 12V a 7805 is turning to heat 7v…I like using 7805's when the input is 8 to 9v and draw is next to nothing.
Recom Power R-78E5.0-1.0 is a 5v 1amp 5w regulator which is good from 8v to 28v input is 91% efficient.
